The Project:

Completion of the South Fish Creek Complex, through the construction of two additional arenas, has been a goal of the South Fish Creek Recreation Association (SFCRA) since the Complex opened in 2001. The facility was originally designed for four ice surfaces rather than the current two but, in 1999, the City and SFCRA decided to build a scaled back facility due to capital constraints. The intent has always been to complete the four-arena design and, accordingly, the design team left enough land for completion of the complex, drew up plans for the four-surface facility, and established most of the mechanical and infrastructure requirements to operate four arenas.

Over the last year, SFCRA has updated and upgraded the original plans. Through careful planning and study, SFCRA has refined the original plans to include the following main elements:

  • A new centralized main entrance.
  • Two new arena pads featuring year-round flexible use for all sports.
  • Ten new dressing rooms which include two flex changes rooms for co-ed players.
  • Two officials’ rooms.
  • Two large storage spaces.
  • Two administration office areas.
  • A large multi-purpose room with operable partitions allowing the space to be divided into several smaller rooms.

Project Schedule:

Design and construction planning for the SFCRA Facility Project is well underway.
Currently the project is in the Development Permit stage.

Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2010 and the facility will open its doors in 2011.

Project Cost:

The SFCRA Facility Project cost is $22.1 million.

Building Community Campaign

In order to secure $22.1 million for this project, SFCRA has launched a major capital campaign. This campaign, The SFCRA Building Community Campaign is seeking support from a wide array of constituents, both public and private, in the form of philanthropic gifts, grants and sponsorships.

Combined with a $14 million commitment from the City of Calgary in the fall of 2007, the Campaign has now also received $3.26 million from the Province of Alberta through the Major Community Facilities Program. Fundraising is currently underway to raise $4.2 million from private and corporate gifts and sponsorships; $640, 000 has been raised from the private sector to date.

The SFCRA Building Community Campaign is in its final phase of a two-year campaign ending in February 2010 with the doors of the new facility expected to open in 2011.
